Dr. Ansel T. Johnson

Optometrist | Clinical Director

Dr. Ansel Johnson is the founder and clinical director of Vision Salon Eye Care Associates in Blue Island, Illinois. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL, and a Doctorate degree from the 4-year Doctor of Optometry program at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. He also earned a post-graduate certificate from the Optometry Executive Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He is currently an adjunct professor at Midwestern University Chicago College of Optometry in Downers Grove, IL, the Kentucky College of Optometry in Pikeville, KY, the New England College of Optometry, Boston, MA, and the Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, TN. In addition to the above programs, his office serves as an externship site for the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. He also currently serves on the staff at Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Johnson’s office is the first and only in Illinois to offer a Nationally Certified Diabetes Self-Management Program within an eye care facility. He is a certified lifestyle coach for the CDC Diabetes Prevention Program, co-founder of the KNOC out Diabetes educational program, and has been a member of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists for over 20 years.

Dr. Johnson is a national thought leader in eye care. Concentrating on eye care technologies, glaucoma, and diabetes management, he is a national industry speaker. He was the first optometrist to present accredited Continuing Education across multiple disciplines to a multiple-disciplinary group of diabetes educators, nurses, optometrists, physical therapists, and pharmacists in Illinois.

In June 2020, Dr. Johnson founded and serves as CEO of the Health Living With A Vision Foundation, which is dedicated to combating the health and wellness disparities in communities of color.

Dr. Johnson has demonstrated strong professional leadership through multiple roles over the years, including Chairman and member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis Awareness, and Optometric Medical Director for United Eye Care Providers, Illinois’ largest independent network of optometrists. He serves on the Executive Board of IDOC, the largest independent optometry network in the U.S., and as co-state director for Illinois with the National Optometric Association. Additionally, he chairs the health care committee for the Southland Black Chamber of Commerce, the largest Black Chamber of Commerce in Illinois.

Twice listed in Black Enterprise Magazine as one of America’s top 101 African American doctors, he was honored in a White House ceremony during the Clinton Administration as a Head Start success story. Dr. Johnson is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Dana Shannon, FAAO

Optometrist

Dr. Shannon is pleased to provide you and your family with the highest quality of personalized eye care and enthusiastically welcomes new patients. As a Hazel Crest native, Dr. Shannon is excited to provide eye care to Chicago’s south side and south-suburban communities.

Dr. Shannon is passionate about educating her patients on the importance of wellness in eye care. She provides care for patients with ocular diseases, including glaucoma, cataracts, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and multiple corneal conditions. Additionally, Dr. Shannon cares for pediatric patients, performs contact lens fittings, and provides myopia management.

Dr. Shannon's Background
  • Dr. Shannon earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a minor in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she played tennis for the Panthers.
  • She then went on to earn her Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and completed a one-year residency training at the University of Chicago, specializing in ocular disease.
  • She participated in two week-long medical missionary visits to Belize and Costa Rica and provided underprivileged patients with free eye care.
  • She is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Illinois Optometric Association, the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), and the National Optometric Association (NOA), where she also serves on the NOA Executive Board as Trustee of Region 2.

In addition to caring for her patients, Dr. Shannon enjoys tennis, weight training, volunteering at community health education events, and spending time with her family. Dr. Shannon is proficient in Spanish, enjoys international travel, and has traveled to 10 different countries and counting.

The eye specialists at Midwest Eye Professionals provide the majority of our surgical eye care, including but not limited to glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery, LASIK surgery, retinal surgery, and corneal surgery. Our office will often co-manage surgical eye care for our patients or make sure we closely communicate with the eye surgeon to ensure the very best outcomes.
