What is Farsightedness?

May 24, 2021 | Vision Problems

Farsightedness (hyperopia) is a common vision condition in which you can see distant objects clearly, but objects nearby may be blurry.

How much it affects you depends on the degree of farsightedness. Some people with mild hyperopia can see close-up objects clearly, while those with stronger prescriptions may struggle with near tasks. Learn more about farsightedness and how you can treat it.

What causes farsightedness?

Most people are born with farsightedness, and it often runs in families. Hyperopia occurs when the eyeball is slightly shorter than normal or the cornea is flatter than it should be. This causes light to focus behind the retina instead of right on it, which makes nearby objects appear blurry.

Signs of farsightedness

You might be farsighted if you notice:

  • Blurry vision when looking at things up close

  • Eye strain or headaches after reading or using screens

  • Squinting to see nearby objects clearly

  • Trouble focusing on tasks that require near vision for long periods

Diagnosing farsightedness

During a comprehensive eye exam, our optometrist will check your vision and measure the shape and length of your eye. With this information, we can determine exactly how light is focusing on your retina so we can prescribe the right corrective lenses for you.

Can farsightedness be cured?

While farsightedness can’t be “cured,” you can correct this condition with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Glasses and contacts are the most popular options for restoring clear vision with hyperopia.

If you’re a good candidate, LASIK and other refractive surgeries can reshape the cornea (the clear front part of the eye). After LASIK, most patients no longer need glasses or contacts, meaning you will save a significant amount of money on vision correction.
