How Do Myopia Management Contact Lenses Work?

Apr 1, 2024 | Myopia Management

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision problem where close-up objects look clear but distant objects are blurry. If your child is nearsighted, myopia management contact lenses offer a safe and effective way to slow down the progression of myopia and lower the risk of serious eye issues later in life. These specialized lenses correct vision while also reducing myopia progression in children. In this blog post, we will discuss how these contact lenses work and the different options available for your child.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology (or ortho-k) involves wearing specially designed contact lenses overnight. The lenses gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, allowing them to see clearly during the day without glasses or contact lenses. By temporarily flattening and altering the cornea’s shape, ortho-k slows down myopia progression. This treatment is safe and reversible, making it a popular choice for parents looking for a non-surgical option to manage their child’s myopia.

Multifocal contact lenses

Another option for myopia management is multifocal contact lenses. These lenses have different zones for near and distance vision, which helps to reduce eye strain and potentially slow down the progression of myopia. By providing clear vision at all distances, multifocal contact lenses can improve visual comfort and reduce the need for prescription changes over time. This type of lens is easy to adapt to and comfortable to wear, making it a great choice for busy families with children.

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses are the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lens proven to slow myopia progression in children aged 8-12 at the start of treatment. When worn over three years, MiSight® 1 day contact lenses reduced myopia progression by 59 percent on average for kids ages 8-12. In addition to providing clear vision and preventing myopia progression, these daily disposable soft contact lenses are child-friendly and easy to use.
