Diabetes

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar. Glucose is vital to your health because it’s an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues, as well as the the main source of fuel for your brain. However, high glucose levels increases the risk of diabetes eye problems. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults age 20 to 74.

In addition to causing fatigue and weight loss, diabetes can also affect your vision. High levels of blood sugar pull fluid from your tissues, including the lenses of your eyes. This affects your ability to focus and can cause blurry vision.

If it is left untreated, diabetes can cause new blood vessels to form in your retina (the back part of your eye) and damage established vessels. For the majority of people, these early changes do not cause vision problems. However, if these changes continue without detection, they can lead to vision loss and blindness.

If you have diabetes, regular visits to your eye doctor for eye exams are important to avoid eye problems.
