How Do Myopia Management Contact Lenses Work?

Apr 1, 2024 | Children's Eye Care, Contacts, Myopia Management

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision problem where close-up objects look clear but distant objects are blurry. If your child is nearsighted, myopia management contact lenses can be a safe and effective way to slow down its progression and help lower the risk of serious eye problems later in life.

These special lenses not only correct vision but also help keep myopia from getting worse. In this blog, we will explain how these contact lenses work and explore the options available.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) uses specially designed contact lenses that your child wears overnight. While they sleep, the lenses gently reshape the cornea, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts.

Ortho-k doesn’t just correct vision temporarily—it has been shown to slow myopia progression by about half compared to wearing standard glasses or regular contact lenses.¹ This treatment is safe, reversible, and a popular choice for parents looking for a non-surgical way to manage their child’s myopia.

Multifocal contact lenses

Multifocal contact lenses are another effective myopia management option. These lenses have different zones for near and distance vision, helping to reduce eye strain and slow the progression of myopia.

By providing clear vision at all distances, they improve visual comfort and can reduce the frequency of prescription updates. Multifocal lenses are easy to adapt to, comfortable to wear, and a convenient choice for busy families.

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses are the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lenses proven to slow myopia progression in children aged 8-12 at the start of treatment. When worn over three years, MiSight® 1 day contact lenses reduced myopia progression by 59 percent on average for kids ages 8-12.

In addition to providing clear vision and preventing myopia progression, these daily disposable soft contact lenses are child-friendly and easy to use.
